  • Distortion

I'm getting to the point in my typing training where I send a progress report to my teacher at the end of the lesson, and she has to get back to me before I can go any further. So I'm waiting right now. Over these past few days that I've had free, I've gotten into the habit of working on my training for an hour or so first thing in the morning, so right now, I feel like I should be working on it, but I can't just yet. Granted, it's a holiday weekend, and I can't fault my teacher for taking her time. So I'm trying to occupy myself otherwise.

I got my new glasses in on Friday. I like them. They're purple. They're not a loud sort of purple that would make people passing me in the street take notice. Rather, they're a cool, metallic sort of purple. They're also a more angular shape than I think I've ever had. I've tended to go for oval-ish-shaped lenses, but these are a little more square, but still curved.

It's always a bit of an experience getting used to a new pair of glasses. It feels as if my world goes through a little adjustment. It's not just that everything gets a little clearer, it's also that everything seems to shift just a few inches. I look at the ground as I'm walking, and it appears as if there's a subtle bulge in the floor that moves under my feet as I walk. After looking at something close-up for a while, and feeling like I'm getting the hang of it, I shift my focus to something far away, and have to blink a few times, because it seems a little out-of-proportion.

Have you ever been to a website that has a "virtual tour" of a certain facility? Looking through the computer screen, you seem to be planted in the middle of a room (concert hall, hotel room, what have you), and you can drag your mouse around to see in all directions from your vantage point. The edges of the picture look a bit rounded where they should be straight, and the whole thing is just a little oddly proportioned. It's kinda like that, only the computer screen is about an inch away from my eyes.

But, soon enough (it's happening already) my eyes adjust, and the slightly altered world slides into place, becoming the world as it should be. In time, if I ever misplace these glasses and put on my old ones so I can see to look for my glasses (I'm quite blind without glasses), they'll make the world a little distorted, with none of the welcome clarity I'm now enjoying.
